Conversations in HotDish Hell, MN #9: Do I look like an anime?

angryanimeWorking part-time at the HotDish Hell convenience store the “Kum Kwik“, you meet all kinds of people. Despite how you’re treated you must remain friendly and always always always tell people to have a nice day. Even if your home life sucks eggs you still have to smile through grit teeth.

I’m always shocked by the church folk who come in on Sunday mornings for their morning coffee and snap at me. i wish i could tell them that if they feel that way after church, they need to try something different.

Other people treat you like you’re a lower life form because you work at a “gas station”. those are the ones i’d like to pull across the counter and bounce their heads across the formica and stomp on them until they pee blood. but, i have anger issues.

I was approached by one customer who thought i was Japanese and he decided he was going to give me some of my own culture:

Me: thanks for stopping at Kum Kwik, please come again!

Customer: (bowing) domo…arigato.

Me: (smiles) okay…um, have a great day.

Customer: domo arigato.

(uncomfortable silence)

Customer: domo arigato.

Me: Yep.

Customer: aren’t you going to reply?

Me: um…i’m not japanese…so i wouldn’t know how to respond.

Customer: oh, i’m sorry, i thought you were Japanese.

Me: nope, but good guess.

Manager: Don’t your people say “hola”?

Me: (sigh) i’m going on break.
