Uncle Meximo’s Cure for Cabin Fever: Christmas Break Edition

boredxmaskidsIn this electronic age, of short attention spans and ADHD diagnosis’, I know it can be hard to keep that child engaged and unbored throughout their Christmas break. I know it’s only a week and a couple days, but to parents it may seem like weeks; especially if you have to listen to “i’m bored, i’m bored, i’m bored, i’m bored” several times a day after you spent your entire paycheck on christmas gifts for them.

SO i dug deep into my memories and thought about things me and my brothers and sisters did to pass the time when we got “bored” with our christmas gifts:

boredxmassled-if you live in an area with snow there are a million things to do: ski, sled, snow angels, snow forts, snowball fights, boot hockey, ice skating, etc.

-Take that shovel and earn a little extra ching shoveling driveways for the neighbors.

-Theme movie night. Pick a theme, get as many movies that have to do with that theme you can possibly watch, get some munchies and friends and have a marathon night.

-Hot Chocolate stand. Hey, you had lemonade stands in the summer, why not hot chocolate stand for winter?

-Ice/snow sculptures. Pile up a bunch of snow, throw some water on it, let it freeze, and then start chipping away your work of art.

boredxmasdogsled-if you and your friends have dogs, see how many of them it takes to pull you on a sled.

-Hiking. You can make snowshoes out of old tennis rackets or you can try your hand at crafting your own out of something else. strap them to your boots and head for the woods.

There are so many other things you can do to drive away those boredom blues, the key is to use your creativity.

I love theme nights for movies. Sometimes we’ll do a theme weekend such as Home Alone I & II. We love when we can enjoy each other’s company without having to try. That’s important to my family. I have yet to hear “I’m bored” from my family. I guess because we live in Canada and we do quite a bit outdoors that it’s hard to say those words and mean them.

One of our other favorite pass times is visiting friends. Winter’s perfect for catching up with those we’ve neglected throughout the year. Those evenings when it’s so cold, we take into stride and visit. We just love sitting at the table with a tea and just talk.

    Fun times.

that does sound fun! i’m invited to a “Hobbit” party. we’ll be watching all 3 “LOTR” back to back, some are coming in costume, and they’ll be making “hobbit food”. woot!
