The Life and Death of HotDish Hell’s DownTyme…

DownTyme started out when two guys who used to be in a few bands got together and decided to jam and drink together.

I had been in a few bands previous: Nyctophobia (late 80’s), Blue Steele (early 90’s), Bent Penny (mid 90s), and Jake and the Phocylls (mid to late 90’s) where i played Elvis for part of the show.

Denny had been a drummer for Marvin County’s version of “the Beatles” in a band called “The Epicureans”. He was a seasoned veteran and i was a bit intimidated, but we really gelled together and we decided we may have something.

We added Mark, who was a pretty good guitarist, but we needed a bass player so he stepped up. We played our first gig at an event called “Fridays in the Park” out in front of HotDish Hell’s City Hall. It was a fun show because the old folk told us to turn down and some transient drunk girl grabbed Mark’s microphone and began singing “House of the Risin’ Sun” with us.

While the transient wasn’t a great singer, we did decide we should add a female vocalist to give my chain smoking voice a break throughout our show. So we brought in Marnie. We all became pretty tight and played a talent show and did pretty well.

We played a few parties and an Itallian wedding, which was quite scary since we didn’t know any Frank Sinatra. But they loved us.

We landed the gig of house band for “The Fireside Lounge”. It was huge for us because it was a guaranteed gig every weekend. Our only stipulation was that we couldn’t play any other venues in HotDish Hell. So we did play outside the city limits.

Unfortunately, Denny and Mark had a falling out and Denny quit the band. So we had to scramble to find a drummer. So we added Tom who was also a very talented drummer. The guy read drum music, for crying out loud! DRUM MUSIC!

Well, we also brought in Lonnie because we thought it would be nice to have a lead guitarist. Lonnie had a great blues hand and we all fit so well together, we had ourselves a pretty great band.  Our sets included a wide variety of music: Buddy Holly, The Beatles, Elvis, Red Hot Chili Peppers, The Animals, CCR, Bonnie Tyler, U2, Chris Isaak, Tom Petty, Janis Joplin, etc.

Well, then i had this weird idea that i wanted to move to Omaha to try and learn a construction trade. i came back on the weekends to play with the band and to be with my girlfriend and kids, but it got to be too much so i left the band.

After getting screwed over by my “friend” who was going to teach me the ropes of kitchen remodeling i came back. They had replaced me with another local musician, Dr. Fancy, from Dr. Fancy’s Chiropractic. The whole band was in a shambles, no practices, new songs and everyone had developed a huge ego. Marnie ran into some private problems, then Mark wandered off into his own personal problems, and Lonnie did too.

Mark left, and he had most the equipment. Eventually, we all went our separate ways. Mark lives in New Mexico, Tom now plays with a band called “The Retrosonics”, Marnie lives in obscurity, and Lonnie is battling personal demons. Dr. Fancy put his old band back together again and they are touring the local circuit.

I still itch to play with a band again. Perhaps this year.
